From Cuban descent, Sergio Veranes grows up between Madrid and Paris. His adventure with photography starts at nine with a Kodak Instamatic. Photography becomes his childhood hobby and he self-teaches himself everything from the camera to printing. He studies at Brown University and takes photography courses at Rhode Island School of Design.
He starts his photographic career in Paris in 1996, then moves to New York, shooting fashion, international advertising campaigns and portraits of celebrities. He contributes to Glamour USA, GQ Italia, Esquire UK, Condé Nast Traveler UK, Grazia Italia. He focusses his personal work on B&W nudes.
In time, insisting on a purist and minimalist approach, he distances himself from commercial work. Searching for human depth, he gears his work towards the production of authentic, incisive portraits. He also explores the expression of bodies in movement, working with dancers and athletes. He masters light and contrast with a dedicated sculpting touch, producing images of dramatic depth and beauty.
His artistic photography is represented in galleries worldwide, exhibited in museums, among them Les Jardins du Palais Royal in Paris (2009) and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Panamá (2011), and sold in auction houses such as Drouot in Paris.
He lives between New York and Montreal with his wife and 4 children.
“In my photographic work, art, beauty and spirit come to life within the context of human identity. I have traveled all over the World and lived in 10 countries. Passionate about human diversity and a strong advocate of social integration, I believe in the uniqueness and beauty of each and every individual.
I come across gestures, face lines, imperfections, body language and attire that speak of lives charged with emotion and I strive to capture authentic glimpses of a person’s story with an aesthetic, psychological and anthropological discourse in mind: transfixing subjective reality into beauty. And by beauty I mean attitude: the passionate and complex expression of the self through body, mind and soul.
Being a purist at heart, I approach the sittings with a minimalist setting, allowing for an intense, direct and undisturbed focus on the subject. I look for intimacy and explore ways of peaking into souls. My lighting allows for spontaneity, freedom of interaction and improvisation. It also opens the door for high contrasts, sculpting bodylines and features. I thus achieve images of strong emotional content and dramatic aesthetics.”
