With a keen eye for beauty and purity, a reverence for authenticity and a life-long continual quest for inner awareness that started at 16 when he was initiated to Transcendental Meditation, Sergio Veranes, today also a Reiki and Sophrology master, sublimates the essence of his subjects with stunning photographs.
The luminously striking black and white images he composes are buttressed by raw refinement, sensibility and humanity, enhanced through his own unique minimalist and abstract perspective, seeped with awe and reverence for his subjects and strongly suggestive of inner beauty, emotions and strength. They convey a touching sense of intimacy, trust and generous surrender.
"I instantly fell in love with photography at the age of 12 when I borrowed my mother's Zeiss Ikon reflex camera. My passion led me to teach myself the art of photography, devouring Life books on the camera, the negative, and the print. I set up a makeshift darkroom in our bathroom, where I processed film and printed black-and-white photos at home. To fund this new hobby, I photographed people playing tennis (my other passion) and sold prints of them in action or at rest.”
The enthusiastic response to his dynamic shots and authentic clichés established his talent for body and portrait photography. A few years later, still in his teens, he came across Edward Weston’s Nudes at a book fair, which had a profound impact on his artistic vision. He began photographing his early girlfriends, developing a style characterized by a poetic and intimate approach to nude photography. This blend of sensuality and reverence continues to define his work today.
He started his photographic career in the nineties, shooting fashion, lingerie, international advertising campaigns and portraits of celebrities. He contributed to editorials such as Glamour USA, GQ Italia, Esquire UK, Condé Nast Traveler UK, Grazia Italia.
In 2009, a profound mystical experience dramatically altered the trajectory of his career. Driven by a deep inner search for authenticity, he made the bold decision to leave behind a successful career in fashion photography. Trusting his instincts, he devoted himself entirely to his artistic pursuits, channeling his energy into portraiture, body expression, nudes, and the abstraction of nature. This shift marked a pivotal moment in his creative journey, allowing him to explore deeper, more meaningful expressions of his vision.
His artistic photography, is represented by Galerie de l'Instant in Paris and has been exhibited in museums and art fairs, among them Les Jardins du Palais Royal in Paris (2009) and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Panamá (2011), AIPAD, Paris Photo, Arles and sold in auction houses such as Drouot in Paris.
He lives in Montreal since 2014 with his wife and 4 children. He is also professionally active in NYC.
